The Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Raising Self-Reliant Children

Wendy Mogel

I first encountered this in a book club for parents at my children’s elementary school. In the inside cover of my copy I wrote, “Everyday isn’t perfect, don’t fear the pain.” Reading Mogel’s first book was a sigh of relief for this young mom striving to do right by her children. Today, it is still one of my favorites as I have seen through years of work with parents and children the extraordinary value of resilience.

Julie Lythcott-Haims’ missive ought to be required reading for all parents. The best intentioned parents often overparent in their efforts to protect, guide or shape their children. This accessible book makes a compelling case for parenting to build competent and confident children while preserving our sanity and sense of self.

There is no shortage of research on the impact of screens and technology on our children. Shlain’s beautiful book offers an opportunity to find balance for yourselves and your kids. After reading this book, I was empowered to be intentional around how we as a family allowed technology to both intrude into and enrich our lives and our relationships.
